  1. fresh advice

sunir from freshbooks was kind enough to invite me to the freshbooks office in toronto. he was incredibly gracious with his time, and made a lot of effort to help me learn about marketing and PR.

as far as startup internet companies go in ontario, freshbooks has a sort of “this is the way it’s done” reputation about them amongst us first-timers. freshbooks is also known for being involved in the startup community.

basically they’re a great bunch of guys.

their office was in a strange location — sunir’s directions instructed me to park at a place called “bellini cabinets” and then make my way up some stairs. but once i got there, i was amazed. the space was huge with high ceilings and a gorgeous open-concept feel to it. everyone was working on large monitors on large desks in one large room. what a cool place to work!

sunir gave me lots of great advice including:

    • read “crossing the chasm” (he tells me this at least 3 times every time i meet him)
    • consider having separate pr firms that specialize in target demographics, and then paying them per project
    • banner marketing only works when you have a very specific set of sites you post them on
    • in marketing, measurement is crucial. you need to find every way to measure where your visitors are coming from, which ads are working, and details about your visitors. sunir has all these dynamically generated maps that tell him about his visitors and users. it’s quite impressive.
    • understand your brand and how your customers perceive your brand

as i sat with sunir, mike mcderment stopped by and sat with us. he gave me advice on how to get connected in the startup network and with angel investors.

there’s a lot to learn from the people at freshbooks.

also, from what i could tell, it seems like there’s a lot of exciting things in the near and long-term future of their company.

thanks, freshbooks team, for being such an excellent example for the rest of us and for being so helpful.

  3. aiderss mentioned in startupnorth

aiderss_logo.gifi’ve been going around saying that the rss rank-sorter by aiderss is the most interesting new “web 2.0″ application in this area.

i met the guy behind the code, ilya, back in guelph’s first democamp. this guy is smart.

aiderss was recently mentioned in startup north and jevon gave them a blazingly positive review. congratulations, ilya and kevin from aiderss for all the positive press. i am sure you two are going to get a lot more attention in the future as your app grows.

from playing around with the application myself, i really like the look and feel of it. the ui is great and the interface is ajax-snappy.

    good luck kevin and ilya.

  7. writing efficient php – slide deck

graph.jpgin the last waterloo democamp, i gave a presentation on how to make PHP + MySQL web applications more efficient (but most suggestions apply to any web server configuration). this is the slide deck from that presentation.

if you or the developers that work for you make a web application that serves many users, you should look at this site (especially if you use PHP+MySQL).

the main point in this presentation is that intelligent caching is the best way to make your site blazing fast. there isn’t really a way around it: every serious web application will eventually need some sort of intelligent cache on its site (so plan ahead).

here is a pdf version of the presentation: php3.pdf

to make this presentation, i used two other public slide decks heavily:

    http://jeremy.zawodny.com/mysql/scaling-mysql-and-php.html

is a presentation about the challenges yahoo had in scaling and some of their solutions.

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/21793/Scaling-PHPMySQL-Presentation-from-Flickr

is a presentation about flickr’s challenges in scaling php-mysql.

there is some source code stripped from the slides i provided above on how we do file-based caching. but this link:

    http://www.rooftopsolutions.nl/article/107

has an even better implementation that you can use for file-based PHP caching.

the other significant point i mention in my slides is the use of the ionCube PHP Accelerator. an issue raised by jason hanley in an email to me is that ionCube’s accelerator doesn’t work for PHP5 but i now highly recommend APC: http://ca3.php.net/apc instead. APC is what facebook uses, apparently, for php acceleration. we’ve had great benefit from using php acceleration.
